CHCI programs provide comprehensive support from high school to graduate school and beyond, including preparing high school students for college; providing congressional internships for undergraduates; providing professional opportunities in Washington, D.C., for college graduates and young professionals; and giving out hundreds of scholarships for college.
CHCI programs promote post-secondary education readiness, and exposure and experience to policy and the legislative process to increase the number of Latino policy professionals in underserved areas.
Why are CHCI programs so important?
CHCI programs are important for several reasons.
- The Latino population is the fastest growing demographic in the country. Fifty percent of U.S. population growth is attributed to Hispanics and Hispanics are projected to grow to 25 percent of the U.S. population by 2025. Currently, nearly 47 percent of Hispanics do not finish high school and only 12 percent complete college. It is imperative that the Latino community succeed to ensure the future success of America.
- By 2025, at least one out of every two workers entering the U.S. labor force will be of Hispanic descent - it is imperative that we improve Latino graduation rates. Access to quality education and educational attainment among Latinos is necessary for the U.S. to remain competitive.
- In the past four years alone, interest in CHCI programs has increased by 150% to 76,000. It is critical that CHCI programs continue to meet the growing need of the Latino community.
- Over 100,000 users connect with CHCI's on-line education clearinghouse every month, totaling more than 1.1 million visitor sessions a year.
What is CHCI's impact?
CHCI has more than 2,700 alumni of its programs that now serve in high level positions all over the nation, including several working in the White House and administration posts. Almost 80 percent of CHCI alumni said they would not be where they are professionally without their CHCI experience.
