CHCI's Areas of Impact
Today, Hispanics are the largest and the youngest minority group in
the United States. However, more than 87% of Hispanics do not have
bachelor’s degrees, and nearly half leave school by the eighth grade.
Currently, the Hispanic dropout rate is 2.5 times higher than that of
African Americans and 3.5 times higher than the rate of non-Hispanic
whites. Additionally, Hispanics are vastly underrepresented in elected
office. Hispanics comprise only 5 percent of the U.S. House of
Representatives and there are only 3 in the U.S. Senate. Hispanic
representation is also lacking in most sectors of society, including
higher education, business, and media. Given these facts, the programs
and services CHCI provides are now more important than ever to the
future success of the Hispanic community and to the country.
