 Why
is CHCI Important?
Today, Hispanics are the largest and the youngest minority group in the United States. However, more than 87% of Hispanics do not have bachelor’s degrees, and nearly half leave school by the eighth grade. Currently, the Latino dropout rate is 2.5 times higher than that of African Americans and 3.5 times higher than the rate of non-Latino whites. Additionally, Latinos are vastly underrepresented in elected office. Hispanics comprise only 5% of the U.S. House of Representatives and there are none in the U.S. Senate. Latino representation is also lacking in most sectors of society, including higher education, business, and media. Given these facts, the programs and services CHCI
provides are now more important than ever to the future success of the Hispanic
community and to the country.
Why is CHCI Unique?
CHCI is the only national Latino organization that offers a summer internship program, a fellowship program, and scholarship awards for Hispanic youth.
Our comprehensive approach is proven to help students succeed in their educational and professional endeavors. We take great pride in assisting high school
students achieve a college education, college students attain valuable work experience, and college graduates obtain a career in a variety of fields. CHCI also understands the importance of parental involvement in a child’s education and for that reason we actively seek to empower the parent’s role in the education process.
