CHCI 2012 Alumni Association Highlights

Alumni Association Restructuring

The CHCI Board of Directors established an Alumni Task Force to review the Alumni Association’s structure and update its bylaws. The Alumni Task Force’s work included:

  • Conducting an Alumni survey on mission, expected engagement and how alumni felt about restructuring the association from its current program format to other options such as a subsidiary or independent entity
  • After analysis of Alumni survey findings indicated support for a subsidiary organization
  • Presented to the CHCI Board of Directors during annual meeting
  • Follow up work will continue in 2013 including hiring a Senior Manager of Alumni Affairs to manage alumni portfolio for CHCI and assist with the AA restructuring


CHCI Alumni continue to give financially and of their time to CHCI including:

  • Donating over $4,000 in support of developing the next generation of Latino leaders
  • Participating in CHCI’s Ready to Lead programs across the country as presenters and mentors
  • Alumni provided over 375 volunteer hours to CHCI by reviewing program applications, serving as mentors during our Ready to Lead program events across the country and by giving of their time during HHM week
  • Mentoring current participants and organizing networking events and panels for them


The Alumni Association continued to improve and update its Alumni contact database through the Alumni Portal, Facebook and LinkedIn more than doubling its impact and connectivity with its base!

  • CHCI’s Alumni Portal database grew from 94 in early 2011 to 1062
  • The CHCI Alumni Association Facebook group page has 125 new members for a total of 429
  • The CHCI LinkedIn group page has 60 new members for a total of 260 members

Hispanic Heritage Month/CHCI Public Policy Conference

Alumni were an important part of the 2012 CHCI HHM events including:

  • Combined, the CHCI Alumni Association 9th Annual Young Latino Professionals Fundraiser and Professional Development session, established an attendance record with over 375 guests and raised over $60,000 for CHCI programs thanks to its lead sponsors FedEx/Teach for America, State Farm, Union Pacific, and The Walt Disney Company
  • CHCI Alumni figured prominently throughout the 2012 Public Policy Conference
  • Presented the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award during Hispanic Heritage Month to Judge Liza Rodriguez (1993-1994 Fellow)
  • Posted press releases and social media hits on Alumni success stories


The CHCI-AA Chapters continued to work locally to help carry out CHCI’s mission to develop the next generation of Latino Leaders. Their work included:

  • National Chapter:  Met regularly with current CHCI participants and Alumni to strengthen mentoring relationships, hosted three community service events around the city, partnered with other alumni associations to host networking events on the Hill
  • Arizona: Ready to Lead Arizona participation, meeting with national Alumni board representative, recruiting for CHCI High School Latino Leaders in DC Program (HSLLDC), email outreach to HSLLDC program Participants, and follow up
  • Boston: Leadership development forum at UMASS Boston, discussed professional and educational opportunities and advice, promoted CHCI programs, and held 1-on-1 resume reviews
  • Chicago: First official chapter meeting, quarterly social or community event, HSLLDC info session, HSLLDC picnic with HSLLDC “junior members”, and Ready to Lead Chicago participation
  • Dallas: Ready to Lead Dallas participation, orientation session for HSLLDC participants, Voto Latino registration volunteering, raised $3,000 for two students to participate in 2013 HSLLDC, and membership growth to 15
  • Los Angeles: quarterly board meetings, HSLLDC recruitment, CHCI table at Adelante Mujer Latina conference, organized Alumni social networking event, and Ready to Lead Los Angeles participation
  • Miami: hosted dinner for HSLLDC Miami students; Ready to Lead Miami/Keeping the Promise: Partnership for Latino Education Success participation
  • New York: Keeping the Promise: Partnership for Latino Education Success participation, Voto Latino registration volunteering, Latino College Expo Leadership Summit and annual college fair at NYU, NALEO citizenship application assistance drive, United for Latino Education fundraiser, networking event with other organizations, and raised over $1,000 for one student from New York region to participate in 2013 HSLLDC

Election of 2013-2014 CHCI-AA Executive Board Members

Alumni chose the next leadership team for the Alumni Association. The Executive Board members are:
