Highlights from 2013 Hispanic Heritage Month Alumni Events

CHCI's 2013 Hispanic Heritage Month events have concluded and once again they were a huge success! This year, the CHCI Alumni Association (CHCI-AA) proudly celebrated its 15th Anniversary highlighting the invaluable support they provide to our program graduates and to the community as a whole.  Below are some of the best highlights of the events.


CHCI-AA Next Generation Professional Development Session, “Breaking Through: Latinos Advance to America’s Boardrooms

Over 75 CHCI alumni and conference participants gathered to learn about the unique challenges faced by Latinos in breaking through the proverbial “glass ceiling” and to share best practices and recommendations on how to gain visibility as well as entry into the corporate and nonprofit boardroom.

Carlos Orta, President & CEO of the Hispanic Council on Corporate Responsibility (HACR) served as trainer/facilitator for the first part of the session, followed up with a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Victor Arias, Jr., Senior Client Partner for Korn Ferry, with distinguished panelists who serve on and represent a variety of board types:

  • Mr. George Herrera, Corporate Board Member, Wyndham Worldwide  
  • Mr. Ramón Murguía, Board of Trustees, W.K. Kellogg Foundation  
  • Ms. M. Lucero Ortiz (alumnus), Board Member, Mary’s Center (Washington, D.C.)  
  • Ms. Susan Santana (alumnus), Secretary, Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute and former CHCI board member

CHCI 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award 

In honor of the CHCI Alumni Association’s 15th Anniversary, CHCI recognized each of the founding members with the coveted Distinguished Alumnus Award, for their continued pledge to Develop the Next Generation of Latino Leaders®, their exceptional vision, leadership, and commitment to institution building. The awards were presented during the CHCI Public Policy Conference’s Tri-Caucus Plenary by CHCI Treasurer and Alumnus, Henry Fernandez and accepted by Miguel Gonzalez, our Founding CHCI-AA President.

CHCI-AA National Business Meeting, Cafecito with the CHCI-AA Founders

Over 40 CHCI alumni gathered for a "cafecito" and conversation with the Founding Members of the CHCI-AA to hear them tell their story of how they decided to form the organization and what they envisioned it would be. The session was moderated by CHCI Alumnus Octavio Saenz.  Current CHCI-AA national and chapter boards also had the opportunity to talk about the great work being done by the CHCI Alumni across the country.

The CHCI-AA Quinceañera Celebration was made possible by the generous support of 21st Century Fox/Fox Audience Strategy, Ibarra Strategy Group and Padrino sponsors.

 CHCI-AA Quinceañera Celebration

The CHCI Alumni Association Quinceañera Celebration, was held later that evening following CHCI’s Reyes of Comedy.  The anniversary event hosted over 330 people in honor of the CHCI-AA’s 15th Anniversary. It included musical entertainment by LD & Jhoni with DJ Xtassy and DC-based mariachis Los Gallos Negros. Sponsors included 21st Century Fox/Fox Audience Strategy at $15,000, Ibarra Strategy Group at $1,500, and 10 individual Padrino sponsors (alumni donors who contributed a minimum of $150 each). Revenue from the Quinceañera Celebration totaled more than $26,600.
