As a government major, I’m learning the theoretical foundations of American government, and I appreciate the foresight of our founding fathers in creating a governmental system with multiple checks and balances. This summer I’d like to see that theoretical system in practice, so that I can learn how to use that system to better serve my community at home in south Texas. What I want to do or be doing in five years: After law school, I’d like to work on healthcare policy to help change our current healthcare system—Latinos suffer more greatly from health issues than the rest of the population, and I believe the government should be responsible for the quality of life of its citizens. I would like to see a healthcare system sponsored by the government, with equal access for citizens regardless of their financial situation and with more preventive care and early treatment. Perhaps I might even be able to contribute, however slightly, on the passage of a piece of legislature or its proposal. I would also like to explore and discover the nation’s capital. What I want to do or be doing in five years: I expect to be in a prestigious law school working toward an international law degree. I hope that during this program I will develop friendships which I will be able to cultivate throughout the rest of college and into graduate school. I see myself having had several opportunities to participate in the political process in my community in Portland Oregon as well as through the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. I expect to maintain a relationship with CHCI by offering to take programs such as Ready to Lead into the Portland community.
