Rachel Ruiz
April 2008
Rachel Ruiz is an outstanding student of Cuban descent who is
dedicated to making a difference in her school and community of
Miami, FL. When Rachel arrived in the United States four years ago,
she did not speak English and was required to take ESOL classes.
Rather than becoming discouraged by this turn of events, Rachel
excelled in her courses and soon became an Honors and AP student on
her way to graduating Summa Cum Laude.
Due to her own experiences with entering a new country, city, and
school, as well as having to learn a new language, Rachel has
committed herself to working with other students required to enroll
in ESOL classes. To this end, Rachel has organized the ESOL
Festival, which provides an opportunity for students to promote the
traditions and cultures of different Latin American countries, at
her high school for the past three years.
In light of the many undocumented students enrolled at her high
school, Rachel has taken the initiative of advocating for immigrant
issues and has gotten involved with SWER (Students Working for Equal
Rights). She has lobbied at the local and state level for the Dream
Act and in-state tuition for undocumented students.
Rachel’s favorite quote is “Be the change that you want to see in
the world” (Gandhi). This is the quintessence of her community
involvement and service. Rachel’s commitment, dedication, and
abundant service distinguish her as a CHCI Young Leader of Today.
