Amanda Barboza
March 2008
Amanda Barboza’s young life has been exemplified by individual
growth and a commitment to serving both the Latino community and the
greater community of Houston, TX. At only 18 years of age Amanda has
already left an indelible impression upon both her peers and
teachers at Chavez High School by not merely excelling in the
Genesys Works program, but also committing herself to utilizing her
new skills in efforts to positively impact her local community.
Through her participation in Genesys Works, she not only received IT
training, but also volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and
initiated other services projects aimed at addressing community
issues in Houston.
Amanda’s commitment to community service extends beyond that
encompassed by her participation in Genesys Works; she has
participated in two Hunger Drives, a Food for Life Drive, and Ronald
McDonald Coke Tab Fund Raiser. Amanda also helps to mentor young
adults who have lost their parents by helping them to plan and
participate in field day activities. Through her various community
service endeavors, she seeks to aid in addressing such issues as
hunger, homelessness, conservation and youth mentoring.
The act of giving of oneself comes as second nature to Amanda, and
she most poignantly exhibits this defining characteristic by helping
her grandmother to raise her youngest brother. Amanda’s dedication
to both academic and civic excellence distinguishes her as a CHCI
Young Leader of Today.
