CHCI-AA Chapters Support High School Latino Leaders in D.C. Program
The 2012 High School Latino Leaders in D.C. (HSLLDC) program was a huge success, with 40 young Latinos from nine cities traveling to Washington on July 22 for a week of leadership development in our nation’s capital. In support of this unique national program, several CHCI-AA Chapters held events and sponsored outreach to ensure these young Latinos had a great experience. This outreach also connected the participants with Latino leaders in their area whom they can reach out to in the future for mentoring and guidance.

Chicago Alums Receive Campaign Training
|
CHCI Chicago alumni Shantel Suarez (2011 Summer Intern) and Hugo Jacobo (2011 Spring Intern) recently participated in the New American Leaders Project (NALP) training at Dominican University in partnership with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). The NALP program specifically focused on preparing first- and second-generation immigrants for civic leadership. Over 20 participants from across Illinois came together to receive training in local and state elections, campaign management, fundraising, and message delivery.
“When I was a CHCI intern, I always imagined that I would someday sit in a leadership position, but after this training, it is becoming a reality,” said Jacobo. Jacobo is currently finishing his one-year fellowship with ICIRR while he is also a member of the Auxiliary Board for Instituto del Progreso Latino. After his internship in Washington D.C., he completed the Public Policy & International Affairs Fellowship and moved back to Chicago with his family.
Suarez is currently the Community Outreach Intern in the town of Cicero, Illinois. She plans to run for the local school board in 2013. She says, “It is because of the guidance and support from the New American Leaders Project and being part of the CHCI family that I now feel more motivated, informed, and prepared to manage a campaign and even run for office.”
