CHCI 2009 Public Policy Conference Kicks Off Hispanic Heritage Month
On Monday, September 14, 2009, CHCI kicked off the first day of its 2009 Public Policy Conference with a series of events highlighting issues of importance to the Latino community under the theme "Latinos Leading in a Global Society."
The Opening Plenary, "Census - Latinos Leading in Numbers," examined the rising population and economic impact of Hispanics within the U.S. and the importance of the upcoming 2010 Census. Hon. Charles A. Gonzalez (TX-20) served as moderator. Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the Department of Commerce Rebecca Blank and The Census Project Director Phil Sparks were among several key experts who served as panelists. AARP and Entravision sponsored the session.
This year CHCI made history by launching its first ever CareerLider LIVE job and internship fair sponsored by Walmart. CHCI Chair Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-12) presented remarks and conducted the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The conference continued with a Latino Leading Summit Series led by Members of Congress including:
• Challenges and Opportunities for Latinos in Rural America: Hon. Ciro D. Rodriguez (TX-23)
• Healthcare Reform: Impact on the Latino Community: Hon. Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) Sponsored by: AztraZeneca and UnitedHealth Group • Latino Labor in the New Economy: Hon. Linda Sanchez (CA-39) Sponsored by: AFL-CIO, COPE Health Solutions, Inc., and LIUNA
Department of Education Secretary Hon Arne Duncan provided keynote remarks during the Opening Luncheon, "Leading in Education." The session examined the current state of Latino education in the country and what the community can do to participate in the reform measures currently being enacted by the Administration so that Latinos will continue to lead. McDonald's and National Education Association served as sponsors.
Univision Noticiero Anchor Maria Elena Salinas moderated the Afternoon Plenary, "Latinos Leading Immigration Reform." Congressman Luis Gutierrez (IL-4), Senator Robert Menendez (NJ) and Cecilia Munoz, deputy assistant to the president and director of intergovernmental affairs at The White House, were among the esteemed panelists who focused on comprehensive immigration reform. Mexicans and Americans Thinking together and Microsoft Corporation sponsored the session.
