After a dynamic first day of policy discussions on September 13, CHCI hosted its Arts & Culture Reception Monday night at the Organization of American States.  Guests celebrated the historic 200 year anniversaries of many Central and South American countries and the 400 year anniversary of the founding of the city of Santa Fe.  CHCI announced a new strategic media partnership with Spanish-language broadcast network Telemundo to promote the organization's educational programming nationally.  Telemundo will also provide scholarships with an internship component to create opportunities for Latino journalism students.

On Tuesday, September 14, 2010, CHCI wrapped up the final day of its 2010 Public Policy Conference, making history as its sessions featured the nation’s top leaders.

First Lady Michelle Obama and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius were among several expert panelists to address healthcare during the morning plenary, “America’s Promise: The Impact of Healthcare Reform.” Moderated by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, First Lady Obama delivered remarks about the Let’s Move! initiative and its goal of solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation.


More than 120 Washington, D.C. area high school students joined CHCI’s Ready to Lead (R2L) college readiness program which jumpstarted its second day of programming with opening remarks from Univision anchor Satcha Pretto.  The keynote lunch featured remarks by MTV Tr3s VJ Carlos Santos and R2L spokesperson, actor and role model Wilmer Valderrama.  Rep. John Salazar and D.C. United soccer star Jaime Moreno joined the financial literacy session.


The conference continued with the Latino Leaders Summit Series led by Members of Congress including:

  • The Continuing Crisis: Current Issues in Latino Homeownership – Rep. Albio Sires

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke and U.S. Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar provided keynote remarks, joined by Rep. Henry Cuellar at CHCI’s Closing Luncheon, “Building Bridges: America’s Role and Responsibility in the Americas.”


The Closing Plenary: Green Economy Leading the Way featured the 2nd Annual CHCI Latino Innovation Recognition, led by Representatives Dennis Cardoza and Ben R. Luján.  CHCI Chair Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez provided the conference's closing remarks.
