Miami Alumni Chapter Sponsors Two-Day Leadership Retreat
CHCI and its Chair, Rep. Nydia Velázquez (NY-12), this week launched a workforce development strategy entitled "Towards 2030: Latinos Leading in a Global Innovation Society." The strategic plan will focus on working with national partners in the business community to invest in developing a workforce pipeline to prepare today's Latino youth to lead in the jobs demanded by a growing global innovation society. It will target four CHCI programmatic areas:
leadership development program expansion
leveraging leadership and event forums
enhancement of employment opportunities through career resources
national benchmarks to track Latino inclusion in pipeline and workforce development initiatives by sector and industry
"The education of tomorrow's workforce begins today. As the United States experiences unprecedented shifts in technology, the economy and demographics, let's join together to place Latinos at the forefront of the green economy," said Velázquez. "New technologies hold great promise for the future of the United States. It's time to forge ahead and seize opportunities so that when 2030 arrives, young Latinos will lead, compete and succeed."

CHCI Miami Alumni Chapter Sponsors Two-Day Leadership Retreat
On Friday, April 10, 2009 the CHCI Alumni Association Miami Chapter co-sponsored the Miami Youth Leadership Retreat (MYLR) Inaugural Mentor/ Mentee Reception with the University of Miami School of Law's Joint Program on Law, Public Policy and Ethics. Miami Chapter member Edlyn Hernandez founded MYLR and spearheaded the two-day program targeted at exceptional high school juniors attending Miami- Dade County Public Schools in under-served communities.
The retreat offered students a plethora of workshops that addressed various aspects of cross-cultural communication, leadership skills, and topics to help them navigate the college admissions process. CHCI Miami Chapter members Hernandez, Claudia Medina, and Luis Hernandez talked to the students about going away to college and writing personal statements, served as mentors and discussed CHCI programs, scholarships, and fellowship opportunities. The Miami Chapter would like to thank Edlyn for her hard work in making CHCI's association with MYLR a great success.
