Univision Exclusive Media Partner for CHCI's 35th Anniversary Awards Gala

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) announced today that Univision Communications Inc., the leading media company serving Hispanic America, will serve as its exclusive media partner for the 35th Anniversary Awards Gala on Thursday, September 13, 2012 in Washington, D.C.  The event, themed “CHCI at 35: Keeping the Founders’ Promise” is the largest and most prestigious in the Latino community, gathering more than 2,500 of the most powerful leaders in support of CHCI’s leadership development programs and educational services for Latino youth and young professionals.  Emmy Award-winning Univision News anchor and 2006 CHCI Chair’s Award recipient Maria Elena Salinas will serve as celebrity host of the Gala, where CHCI will present its highest honors, the Medallion of Excellence Awards and its Chair’s Award, as well as pay tribute to its 35 years of successfully developing the next generation of Latino leaders. CHCI Graduate Fellows Explore Timely Issues During Young Latino Leaders Summit Series

On April 16, the nine 2011-12 Graduate Fellows moderated their respective public policy roundtable discussions on insightful and timely issues affecting the Latino community and the nation. The discussions, which took place on Capitol Hill, were attended by members of Congress, Congressional staffers, public policy experts, national leaders, media, and other change makers.  Some of the high quality panelists/subject matter experts included: Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, Eduardo Ochoa, Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education, U.S. Dept. of Education, and Max Sevillia, Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs, NALEO Educational Fund, to name a few. CHCI Congratulates the 2011-12 Fellows and 2012 Spring Interns

On Tuesday, April 24, CHCI held its Joint Fellows and Spring Interns Graduation Networking Reception in the Gold Room at the Rayburn House Office Building honoring its 2011-12 Public Policy and Graduate Fellows and its 2012 CHCI-Walmart Spring Interns. More than 100 people were in attendance. CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera and CHCI Chair Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez provided opening remarks, followed by insights from Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Joe Baca.  Finally, Gil Valdes of New York Life gave sponsor remarks.  (More)

R2L Dallas Serves as True Inspiration to Dallas Area Youth

On Saturday, April 21, nearly 120 students and mentors gathered on the campus of Mountain View College for a day of inspiration and motivation as part of CHCI’s college readiness program, Ready to Lead.  The day’s workshops included a college planning workshop presented by CHCI Alumnus Amilcar Guzman and a financial literacy workshop presented by Ready to Lead partner the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. (More)

2012 Fiesta de Golf Raises Nearly $200,000 for Scholarships

On Monday, May 7, CHCI held is 16th annual Fiesta de Golf Scholarship Challenge at The Courses at Andrews, Andrews Air Force Base, MD.  Golfers of all skill levels convened for a beautiful day of golf, networking, and support of a worthy cause—Latino scholarships. 

The event was a huge success, with over $190,000 being raised in support of the CHCI Scholarship program for Latino youth.  CHCI sends a special thanks to scholarship challenge host ExxonMobil, as well as the other scholarship challenge partners, whose generous support is keeping the promise to young Latinos.  CHCI would also like to recognize the scholarship challenge honorary co-chairs, tournament advisory committee, and the celebrity guests who donated their time to make this event such a success: Anthony Muñoz, Ken Harvey, Antwaan Randle El, and Mike Reid.
