On Monday, September 13, 2010, CHCI kicked off the first day of its 2010 Public Policy Conference with a series of events highlighting issues of importance to the Latino community under the theme "Celebrating History, Heritage and the American Dream.”
U.S. Secretaries Timothy Geithner and Hilda Solis were among the expert panelists who addressed the opening plenary, "America’s Future: Economic Prosperity," which examined the critical role Latinos have on the job market and the impact of the recession. Congressman Xavier Becerra served as the moderator.
CHCI proudly hosted its second annual Career Lider LIVE job and internship fair. Several Fortune 500 companies were in attendance as many young professionals and students were present to learn about internship and job opportunities.
CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera and CHCI Chair Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez provided opening remarks highlighting CHCI leadership and educational programs and introduced the current class of interns and fellows – the largest class of program participants in CHCI history.

Chair Velázquez delivered the keynote speech for the opening luncheon, America's Promise: Education, which focused on the national imperative for the Latino community to raise college graduation rates. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa and cable network Nickelodeon received the CHCI Service Award in Education for their work to advance the educational attainment of Latinos and all Americans. CHCI also awarded its 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award to Assistant Secretary for Legislative & Congressional Affairs at the Department of Education Gabriella Gomez, the first CHCI alumnus to be nominated and confirmed to an administration post by the U.S. Senate.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano joined a distinguished group of panelists to address comprehensive immigration during the afternoon plenary, “America’s Strength: Immigration Reform.”
Tuesday's schedule features First Lady Michelle Obama, three U.S. cabinet secretaries and Members of Congress addressing health care, international relations and many other hot topics.
