Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Fellows Class

On May 12, 2010, CHCI held its 2009-2010 Fellows Graduation Ceremony at the Library of Congress. More than 100 people joined CHCI Chair Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez and Reps. Xavier Becerra, Ruben Hinojosa, Lucille Roybal-Allard, and John Salazar to honor the fellows' accomplishments.

Over the past nine months, the 22 fellows experienced tremendous personal and professional growth as they participated in policy summits with Members of Congress during the 2009 Public Policy Conference and met with powerful national leaders, including Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. They even had a front row seat when historic health care legislation was passed through Congress and signed by President Obama.

CHCI Public Policy Fellow Andrew Lomeli provided class remarks recapping their experiences and highlighting the fellows' fundraiser which raised $1,450 and will be donated to the CHCI Scholarship Program as their class gift.  The event was sponsored by New York Life.

CHCI would like to recognize its Fellowship Program sponsors:

Ready to Lead (R2L) Miami Makes History

More than 300 Miami area high school students participated in CHCI's Ready to Lead (R2L) program at Miami Dade College - North Campus on Saturday, May 15, 2010.  It was the second consecutive year CHCI held its Miami event there, expanding its partnership with Miami Dade College - North Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente, who was instrumental in gathering the largest one day attendance ever for a Ready to Lead (R2L) session.

The intensive one-day workshop educated high school students about college planning, financing a college education, and leadership development. Ready to Lead spokesperson actor and role model Wilmer Valderrama shared his personal life story of overcoming hardships in pursuit of the American dream and encouraged the group to work hard to achieve higher education.

Rep. Kendrick B. Meeks provided a statement praising Ready to Lead through a spokesperson from his office. "Ready to Lead programs provide real leadership in education throughout the State of Florida, thereby enhancing the quality of life for students and their families."

CHCI would like to recognize its R2L sponsors: AT&T Foundation, USA Funds, State Farm Insurance Companies, Visa, and Darden. A special thank you to the United States Army ROTC for its Miami Ready to Lead partnership.

Local news broadcast station Univision and newspaper El Nuevo Herald provided coverage of the event.

CHCI Staff Takes Leadership Development to Heart

CHCI's mission to develop the next generation of Latino leaders does not only apply to its interns and fellows as two members of its staff have taken on new leadership opportunities.

Reynaldo Decerega, CHCI's Director of Programs, recently participated in "The Art and Practice of Leadership Development: A Master Class for Professional Trainers, Educators and Consultants," at the Harvard Kennedy School in Boston, MA.

The Art and Practice of Leadership Development (APL) is an intensive, one-week Executive Education program designed to engage leadership development professionals from around the world. Participants work closely with experienced colleagues and a faculty of distinguished leadership educators as they examine a range of leadership concepts and teaching methods and investigate questions on leadership.  The program is a very personally engaging experience for participants as they examine the nature of leadership development in today's world.

CHCI is proud of Reynaldo Decerega for his commitment to growing his leadership skills to better serve the students and young professionals he works with at CHCI.

Andrea Velasco, CHCI's High School Programs Specialist for the past year and a half and a former CHCI Fellow, recently accepted a fellowship with the National Urban Fellows' leadership development program in New York, NY.

The National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.

The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.

Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable and just society while serving as role models for future generations.

CHCI wishes Andrea Velasco the best as she takes on new leadership challenges and thanks her for the mentorship and training she provided to so many CHCI Ready to Lead (R2L) students during her time with the organization

You Can Help the Next Generation Become a Success Story

CHCI's online application system continues to prove that there is a tremendous need for financial resources and professional development opportunities for the Latino community. Over the past two program cycles, CHCI has received nearly 20,000 unique applications for CHCI programs.

Please consider a donation to CHCI  so that more talented Latino students have the ability to finance their higher education and become the next generation of Latino leaders and success stories at CHCI.
