CHCI Graduates First Spring Internship Class with Support of Walmart On Wednesday, April 21, 2010, CHCI held a breakfast graduation ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center to celebrate its first class of spring Congressional Interns thanks to the support of Walmart.
CHCI received a $1 million donation from Walmart in 2009 to add spring and fall sessions to its award-winning Congressional Internship Program for the next three years.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Esther Aguilera, CHCI President & CEO, provided opening remarks highlighting the positive impact CHCI's programs have on the Latino community and the great job that CHCI interns perform while working in congressional offices. Read more...

Young Latino Leaders Summit Series Takes on Major Issues Impacting the Latino Community
 Directly following the Congressional Internship Graduation, CHCI presented the Young Latino Leaders Summit Series spearheaded by its Graduate & Young Professional Fellows (GYP)at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. The GYP Fellows lead four expert panels that included Members of Congress, national leaders, and subject matter experts to discuss critical issues facing the Latino community in the areas of health, housing, law, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
Reps. Earl Blumenauer, Charles Gonzalez, Ben R. Luján, and Lucille Roybal-Allard, joined the GYP Fellows as they presented white papers on their topic of discussion.

Ready to Lead (R2L) Program Preps Los Angeles Youth for College On Saturday, April 24, 2010, more than 130 Los Angeles area high school students took part in an intensive one-day workshop to learn about college planning, financing a college education, and leadership development at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Students heard from actor and role model Wilmer Valderrama, the official Ready to Lead spokesperson, as he told a riveting story of how he achieved the American dream through hard work and education.
Vice President of University Advancement Greg Saks and CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera also provided encouraging remarks to students from four Los Angeles area high schools and fourteen developments of the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles.
On May 15, 2010, R2L is headed to Miami Dade College, North Campus in Florida.

CHCI Fellows and Interns Visit with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan The 2009-2010 CHCI Fellows and 2010 Spring Congressional Interns met with Shaun Donovan, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, on Friday, April 23. The secretary addressed several topics and urged the fellows and interns to pursue careers in public service.

CHCI Partners with StoryCorps Historias CHCI recently partnered with StoryCorps to participate in its documentary, Historias. The Historias project gathers candid, grassroots testimonials from Latinos all around the country to document Latino life in the United States. CHCI staff, interns, fellows, and alumni shared their own experiences, with recordings scheduled to be archived in the U.S. Library of Congress.
