CHCI’s Public Policy Conference Closing Luncheon on September 13 will be a powerful ending to a meaningful public policy event. First, CHCI is proud to honor two outstanding individuals who are national advocates for the Latino community in their own unique ways. Orson Aguilar, Executive Director of The Greenlining Institute, will be presented with the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Medallion of Excellence Award, and Writer/Director Chris Weitz will be honored with CHCI’s 2011 Excellence in Service Award.
After the awards presentations, Reps. Raúl Grijalva and Nydia M. Velázquez will host the Closing Luncheon. As the United States aspires to reach a national goal of 60 percent higher education attainment, this timely session will engage leading education experts in a dynamic dialogue on how to increase Latino education attainment, which is imperative to reaching the national goal. “Keeping the Promise of Education” feature Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education and Allan Golston, President, U.S. Programs, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

2011 Distinguished Alumnus Medallion of Excellence Orson Aguilar
Orson Aguilar is part of the new wave of civil rights and community leaders focused on ensuring that the American Dream remains accessible to all Americans. In his role as Executive Director of The Greenlining Institute, Aguilar has become a nationally recognized advocate for communities of color on issues such as the environment, community reinvestment, philanthropy, and leadership development. He is a widely sought after consultant on these issues that not only affect Latinos, but the entire nation. A tireless activist and inspiring leader, Aguilar continues to be committed to making positive social change, and continues to be an exemplary role model for future CHCI Alumni. Read more...

2011 CHCI Excellence in Service Award Christopher J. Weitz
In honor of his enduring excellence in filmmaking, his passion to give voice to the Latino American Dream, and his efforts to create positive change through the arts, CHCI recognizes Writer/Director Chris Weitz with its Excellence in Service Award. Chris Weitz most recently directed A Better Life, a poignant, multi-generational story about a father’s love and everything a parent will sacrifice to build a better life for his child, which Summit Entertainment released on June 24, 2011. After the closing luncheon, attendees are invited to adjourn to Room 147 A/B for a special screening of A Better Life. After the movie, Director Chris Weitz will host a Question and Answer session.

Keeping the Promise is a five-year campaign to raise $43 million to strengthen and expand the reach and scope of our high school college readiness program, annual scholarships and other college attainment efforts, and professional development programs, including internships and fellowships.
Our programs draw from a national group of young Latinos and provide the financial support, resources, and direct work experience on Capitol Hill to develop a pipeline of highly talented young Latino Leaders.
