CHCI is proud to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) by hosting the nation’s premier celebration of the Latino community.  This year’s theme—CHCI at 35: Keeping the Founders' Promise—pays tribute to the Institute's founding members whose vision has resulted in transformative programs that empower young Latinos and develop the next generation of Latino leaders—including you!

2012 marks the 35th anniversary of CHCI’s Annual Awards Gala, and during the past 35 years, CHCI’s programs have made a powerful, positive difference in the lives of more than 7,000 young Latinos.  CHCI's HHM events represent an opportunity to highlight these powerful programs, while raising critical funds to continue and expand opportunities for the next generation of Latino leaders.

As direct beneficiaries of CHCI’s programs, we encourage you—our valued alumni—to participate and contribute in this year’s celebration.  CHCI and the CHCI-AA Executive Board have worked diligently to incorporate several alumni-focused events into this year’s celebration, which include both professional development and networking opportunities.  That said, we are confident that CHCI Alumni will find benefits from all of the Public Policy Conference sessions offered--view the full 2012 CHCI Hispanic Heritage Month Events Schedule.

If you cannot attend this year, we encourage you to make a donation to CHCI's $35 for 35 campaign through our convenient online donation portal.  Your support ensures that future generations of Latino leaders can benefit from the same programs that helped spark your success.

2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award - Judge Liza Rodriguez-Duron
Presiding Judge of County Court at Law #8

2012 Distinguished Alumnus-Judge Liza Rodriguez-Duron

The CHCI Alumni Association in pleased to announce that Judge Liza Rodriguez-Duron has been selected as the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus.  Born and raised in Laredo, Texas, Judge Rodriguez has worked tirelessly over the years representing the State of Texas, and victims of crime in court.  Additionally, she has enjoyed a strong partnership with various law enforcement agencies.  She is also an active volunteer in her community, donating her time at her children’s elementary school and as a soccer coach for her neighborhood association.

As a CHCI 1993-94 Public Policy Fellow, Rodriguez lived in Washington, D.C. where she worked as a legislative analyst with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF).  Additionally, she volunteered at a number of organizations in the greater D.C. area.  Following her ten month fellowship, she returned to San Antonio to begin law school at St. Mary’s School of Law.

Rodriguez enjoyed an impressive ten-year career as a Bexar County Assistant District Attorney, spending her last year in the Family Justice Division, where she handled crimes against children.

Judge Rodriguez was elected to the bench November of 2010 and began her tenure on January 1, 2011.  During her first year in office, she was asked to serve on the DWI Curriculum Committee of The Texas Center for the Judiciary, which serves as the primary source of judicial education for judges throughout the State.  Most recently, Judge Rodriguez has submitted a grant request to the Bureau of Justice Assistance for over $450,000 in order to establish a DWI Court which would provide specialized supervision for persons charged with a subsequent driving while intoxicated offense.   Her vision for County Court #8 involves focusing on alternatives to incarceration, expanding the existing Adult Drug Court program in order to address public safety concerns and increase accountability and continuing to run an efficient court treating all those who come before her with respect and dignity.

CHCI is proud to honor such an amazing Latina on September 11.  Register Now to claim your seat in this celebration.
