CHCI is proud to join forces with NBC News' Education Nation to offer an extraordinary education forum on May 21 in Miami. Beginning at 3:30 pm, CHCI will be on the road in Miami to host its third national education dialogue to boost Latino education attainment and will feature Telemundo Reporter Mary Gamarra, Actor and Director Tony Plana, and Actor and Producer Wilmer Valderrama as celebrity moderators. These events are an important part of the national initiative to raise college attainment rates in our country. A generation ago, the United States ranked first in the world in the percentage of adults with college degrees. Today, our nation ranks 12th. Without significant change in college attainment rates, the United States will face a shortage of 23 million college-educated adults in the workforce in the next 15 years--a crippling blow to U.S. economic competitiveness. The growing Hispanic population will be critical in meeting future workforce needs.

Building on the momentum of powerful Education Forums in New York City and San Antonio, CHCI has assembled another outstanding line-up of powerful Latino leaders to participate in Keeping the Promise: Partnerships for Latino Education Success—CHCI’s education forum designed to foster an ongoing national dialogue focused on increasing educational attainment among young Latinos.

3:45 – 4:25 pm	KEEPING THE PROMISE: LATINO EDUCATION AND THE EMERGING ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY Today one in three entrants into the U.S. labor force is Hispanic, and by 2025 Hispanics will be one of every two new workers entering the workforce. Without significant change in college attainment rates, the United States will face a shortage of 23 million college-educated adults in the workforce in the next 15 years – a crippling blow to U.S. economic competitiveness. Hispanics will obviously prove to be key in meeting future workforce needs. The evolution of technology as an educational tool/resource in recent years has started to transform classrooms across the United States and is challenging the entire education spectrum -- from kindergarten to college -- on how to maximize this resource to increase education attainment. The challenge for the Latino community will be the need to overcome the current digital divide that exists, as studies show that Latinos are less likely than non-Hispanics to have access to the Internet, have a home broadband connection, or own a cell phone. Panelists will discuss the current state of education for the Latino community, how technology is impacting education, and action steps that will increase digital access to ensure Latino educational success. 7:30 – 8:45 pm	NBC News' Education Nation Job One Panel JOB ONE: Preparing America to Compete in the 21st Century The Job One event will bring together top Florida business executives and civic and education leaders to participate in a discussion led by TODAY News Anchor Natalie Morales and Telemundo Network News Anchor José Díaz-Balart on the state of the region’s labor market, the skills and knowledge required of the 21st century workforce and the importance of preparing Floridians to compete in a global economy. The event will begin with an interview featuring U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, followed by a panel of top Florida business and higher education leaders.
