In response to the collapse of the housing market, stricter lending practices have become the common norm. As a result, individuals that traditionally would be considered "creditworthy" are being denied the opportunity to become homeowners since they do not fall in the top credit tier. Unfortunately, these stricter lending practices have made Latino Homeownership even less attainable. The Dodd Frank Act mandated for the creation of Qualified Mortgages (QM) as a way to prevent predatory lending and to further protect consumers. The QM ruling protects consumers while providing lenders underwriting standards that are not overly restrictive. This panel will examine new issues raised by the Qualified Mortgage ruling and the implications that must be addressed by the pending Qualified Residential Mortgage ruling and other factors that influence or deter Latino Homeownership.

Join CHCI Housing Graduate Fellow Alma Acosta as she leads a discussion on protecting and promoting Latino Homeownership after the Dodd Frank Act and how the QM ruling and pending QRM ruling can facilitate future Latino Homeownership.

Panelists:

Janis Bowdler: Director, Economic Policy, National Council of La Raza (NCLR)

Pace Bradshaw: Vice President, Congressional Affairs, Consumer Bankers Association

Brenda Muniz: Senior Advisor, Community Affairs, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)

Tony Hutchinson: Senior Policy Representative, National Association of Realtors

The 2013 CHCI Young Latino Leaders Summit Series is the culmination of CHCI’s premier, nine-month Graduate Fellowship Program.
