Washington DC – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s (CHCI) 2001 Summer Interns organized a 5k Run/Walk-a-thon on Saturday, July 28, 2001, 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Gonzaga High School in Washington, DC. They raised $1,500 for Martha’s Table, a DC area non-profit organization dedicated to fulfilling the needs of low-income children and families and homeless individuals. The event attracted more than 100 area interns, corporate representatives, and members of the local community. "The CHCI 2001 Summer Interns were challenged with the task of organizing and implementing a community service project from start to finish. Their hard work and dedication definitely paid off," said CHCI Executive Director Ingrid M. Durán. "We thank General Motors for underwriting this event and Verizon for matching the funds raised by the interns."
"One of the most important components of CHCI’s Summer Internship Program is the community service project which allows Hispanic youth to work together to help the local community," said Verizon External Affairs Specialist Maria Olivas. "DC is full of interns during the summer seeking policy experience and it’s great to see that some make an important contribution during their stay." CHCI, a non-profit, non-partisan educational 501(c)(3) organization, provides educational programs for Hispanic college and post-graduate students. Every summer, CHCI provides 30 Latino college students from around the United States with the opportunity to learn first-hand how government functions.
