Hispanic Members of U.S. Congress Share Experiences with Area Youth

Edinburg, TX – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) sponsored an educational forum at the University of Texas, Pan American for area high school and college students, parents, and educators on Wednesday, February 21, 2001. Issues discussed included CHCI’s internship and nine-month fellowship programs, scholarship awards and other opportunities available for young Latino students in Washington, D.C. Panelists, including five Hispanic Members of the U.S. Congress, discussed their experiences in public service and the importance of CHCI’s programs in fostering future leaders.

“A key priority for CHCI in 2001 is to expand its efforts to serve Latino communities nationwide. Since 1978, CHCI has been developing future Hispanic leaders and we are eager to share our resources to Rio Grande Valley,” said CHCI Executive Director Ingrid M. Duran.

Panelists included Hon. Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX); Hon. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), CHCI Chairman; Hon. Grace Napolitano (D-CA); Hon. Hilda Solis (D-CA); Hon. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA); and Raul Yzaguirre, President, National Council of La Raza.
