Names Scholarship After
Former CHCI Fellow
On Monday,
October 1, 2001, Anna Maria Arias, Founder, Publisher and Editor of Latina
Style Magazine and former CHCI Fellow, lost her courageous seven
year battle with aplastic anemia.
Ms.
Arias had dedicated herself to creating and growing Latina
Style into a premier magazine for Hispanic women. Her mission was to
provide a voice for and to advocate on behalf of professional Hispanic
women across the United States.
“Anna Maria Arias was an amazing leader
and a positive role model. She was a source of support and guidance to
many of the alumni of CHCI’s leadership development programs. Although
Anna Maria is no longer with us, we shall continue to promote the very
qualities of leadership and activism that she embodied as one of our
most notable Latina alumni,” said CHCI Alumni Association Vice
President Ana Polanco.
The family of
Ms. Arias has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made on
behalf of Ms. Arias to the Unidos for America Relief Fund to assist the
Latino victims of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon. Anna Maria Arias is survived by her mother Rita, her
brothers Stephen and Marcos, her husband Robert, and her beloved cocker
spaniel Federico.
CHCI has named a scholarship award after
Ms. Arias to honor her dedication and commitment to empowering Latina
youth. The Anna Maria Arias Trailblazer Scholarship will be available in
early 2002 to Latina CHCI Fellows seeking to pursue an advanced degree
and who exhibit the qualities exemplified by Anna Maria.
