CHCI Cancels Its 2001 Issues Conference and Annual Gala

CHCI to Make Donation to Aid Relief Efforts

Due to the tragic events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation’s leading Hispanic educational organization, canceled its 2001 Issues Conference and 24th Annual Gala. The CHCI events were to be held the week of September 23, 2001 in Washington, DC to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month.

“CHCI thought it best to cancel its 2001 Hispanic Heritage Month events in light of the recent tragedies in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victims of this national tragedy,” said CHCI Chairman Silvestre Reyes. “We thank our corporate sponsors for their support and understanding.”

CHCI will make a donation of $25,000 to aid Hispanic disaster victims in New York and the DC metropolitan area. The Institute worked closely with several national Hispanic organizations, including the National Council of La Raza and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, to ensure that its donation will go directly to the families that were most affected by this national tragedy.

At this year’s Gala, CHCI was to present the Hon. Henry Cisneros with its 2001 Medallion of Excellence for Leadership and Emilio and Gloria Estefan with its 2001 Medallion of Excellence for Community Service. The Estefans and Mr. Cisneros will now receive these prestigious awards at next year’s Annual Gala which is scheduled for September 18, 2002.

The CHCI Annual Gala, which began in 1977 as a small dinner, has become the most spectacular event commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month. Guests are a virtual who’s who of leaders from the public and private sectors, including Members of Congress, celebrities, corporate executives, Cabinet members, and community activists.  Last year’s Gala raised more than $2.1 million for CHCI’s summer internship, nine-month fellowship, and scholarship awards.
