Washington,
DC –The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the
nation’s leading Hispanic educational organization, awarded its 2001
Scholarship Awards, totaling $155,000, to 34 Hispanic students from
across the U.S. (list provided). The students selected represent fields
of study ranging from chemistry, economics, to Spanish literature.
Community college students will receive $2,000, while undergraduate and
graduate-level students will receive $5,000. “This is the first year CHCI is providing these awards for deserving Hispanic students to achieve their higher education goals and we look forward to helping more students in the years to come,” said CHCI Executive Director Ingrid M. Durán. “CHCI strongly believes, as our community continues to grow in population and prominence, education will play a crucial role in ensuring Hispanics are properly represented in all sectors of society.” The CHCI Scholarship Awards are unique because there is no minimum G.P.A requirement. The goal is to reach Latino youth, especially at-risk students, most in need of financial assistance. These awards are given to Latino students who have demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to the Latino community. Students attending accredited two-year, four-year, or graduate-level educational institutions on a full-time basis are eligible to apply. The application for next year’s awards will be available in October 2001. CHCI,
a non-profit and non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization, provides
educational programs for Hispanic college and postgraduate students.
The CHCI board of directors is comprised of Hispanic members of the U.S.
Congress, non-profit sector leaders, and corporate executives. For
more information on CHCI, call 1-800-EXCEL DC or visit our web site, www.chci.org.
