Members Of Congress Share With L.A. Youth At CHCI ForumMonterey
Park, CA – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the
nation’s leading Hispanic educational organization, sponsored an
educational forum at East Los Angeles College for area high school and
college students, parents, and educators on Thursday, January 31, 2002.
The distinguished group of panelists included Hispanic Members of the
U.S. Congress who shared their experiences in public office in an effort
to inspire young Latinos to achieve their own leadership potential. “As
an elected official, I always enjoy meeting with today’s youth and
sharing with them my own life experiences. Hopefully, by hearing from me
and my other colleagues, our youth will be encouraged to imagine
themselves in leadership positions that will ultimately help empower the
Hispanic community,” said CHCI Chairman, the Honorable Silvestre Reyes
(D-TX). In
addition, forum participants were given information on CHCI’s
leadership development programs – the summer internship, fellowship,
and scholarship awards. Participants were also provided with other
educational opportunities available to Hispanic youth. Joining
Chairman Reyes on the panel were the Hon. Xavier Becerra (D-CA), the
Hon. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), the Hon. Hilda L. Solis (D-CA), the
Hon. Joe Baca (D-CA), and the Hon. Grace Napolitano (D-CA). CHCI,
a non-profit and non-partisan educational 501(c)(3) organization,
provides leadership development programs and educational services for
Hispanic college and postgraduate students. The CHCI board of directors
is comprised of Hispanic Members of the U.S. Congress, non-profit
leaders, and corporate executives. For more information on CHCI, visit
