CHCI Selects 2002 Summer Interns

WASHINGTON, D.C. –The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), one of the nation’s leading Hispanic educational organizations, has selected the 30 participants for its 2002 Summer Internship Program (list provided). The interns, who were chosen from a highly competitive pool of nationwide applicants, will spend the next eight weeks in Washington, DC getting a “behind the scenes” look at how the U.S. government functions.

“CHCI is proud to offer the Hispanic community’s best and brightest the opportunity to grow as leaders and as members of the community. Through the program’s specially crafted curriculum, practical work experience, and community service project, these young leaders learn early on the importance of civic participation,” said CHCI President and CEO Ingrid M. Durán.

Each year since 1986, CHCI offers currently enrolled Hispanic undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of college a paid internship in the nation’s capital. Upon their arrival, interns attend a one-week orientation that prepares them for their summer experience.  The orientation includes workshops on team building, inter-ethnic partnerships, conflict resolution, Capitol Hill culture and dress code, and ethics in government and the workplace. Interns then begin full-time work in a congressional office, where they handle constituent communications, attend legislative hearings, conduct research, and assist with general office operations. Their work experience is enhanced by weekly leadership development sessions during which interns meet and dialogue with national leaders on current policy matters.  Interns also attend networking receptions, participate in coalition-building activities, and collaborate on a community service project.

CHCI, a non-profit and non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization, provides educational programs for Hispanic college and postgraduate students.  The CHCI board of directors is comprised of Hispanic members of the U.S. Congress, non-profit sector leaders, and corporate executives.  For more information on CHCI, call 1-800-EXCEL DC or visit www.chci.org.
