CHCI Offers Educational Opportunities To Hispanic YouthWashington, D.C. - Hispanics are one of the largest and youngest segments of the U.S. population. However, according to a recent study from the Department of Education, Hispanics comprise only 5% of students enrolled in college. In response to this alarming statistic, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) is expanding its outreach efforts to inform more Latino students and their parents of the various educational opportunities available to them. "Our goal is two-fold: we would like to double the number of applications we currently receive for our leadership development programs, as well as serve as a comprehensive resource center for Latino students searching for other educational and work experience opportunities," said CHCI President and CEO Ingrid M. Durán. CHCI’s public policy fellowship and congressional summer internship programs, available to current Latino undergraduate students and recent college graduates respectively, have been at the forefront in providing Hispanic youth the opportunity to explore their interests in the public policy arena while living in Washington, DC. Participants are provided with a stipend, round-trip transportation, health benefits and/or housing. CHCI also awards college scholarships to Latino students in most need of financial assistance. Full-time community college, undergraduate, and graduate students of all majors are encouraged to apply. Applications for all three programs are currently being accepted, and must be postmarked by the following dates to be eligible: CHCI 2003 Summer Internship (January 31, 2003); CHCI 2003-2004 Fellowship (February 28, 2003); CHCI 2003 Scholarship Awards (April 15, 2003). CHCI, a non-profit and non-partisan educational 501(c)(3) organization, provides leadership development programs and educational services for Hispanic high school, college and postgraduate students. The CHCI board of directors is comprised of Hispanic Members of the U.S. Congress, non-profit leaders, and corporate executives.
