Call for Artwork 

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 2003 Hispanic Heritage Month Poster Contest 

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation’s leading Hispanic non-profit and non-partisan 501(c)(3) educational organization, is pleased to request entries for its 2003 Hispanic Heritage Month Poster Contest. Every year, CHCI commissions an artist to create a limited-edition poster that captures the theme of its preeminent week of activities for Hispanic Heritage Month. 

This year’s theme is “Ascending to New Heights” and reflects the great strides and achievements Hispanics have made. The poster will be highlighted during CHCI’s 26th Annual Gala on Wednesday, September 24, 2003 in Washington, DC. The CHCI Annual Gala, the Institute’s principal fundraising event, began in 1977 as a small dinner and has grown over the years to become the most prestigious event commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month. With more than 2,100 guests in attendance, the gala is also one of the largest Latino events in the nation’s capitol. Guests are a who’s who of leaders from the public and private sectors, including Members of Congress, entertainers, corporate leaders, and community activists.  

The selected artist will be invited to attend the gala as a special guest of CHCI. This is an excellent opportunity for an up-and-coming artist to have his or her work viewed by thousands of people from across the country.  

Eligibility and Criteria

This opportunity is open to all Latinos residing in the United States. Artist must be willing to work closely with and accept feedback from CHCI. All artwork should be original and two-dimensional. A preliminary sketch of the final artwork is required for review by CHCI.  No compensation will be given for preliminary artwork entries. The final artwork may be produced in any media or a combination of, but must be a manageable weight for the purposes of hanging or shipping.  Computer graphic art will be accepted but must reflect originality. 

Please note that if chosen, the final artwork becomes the sole property of CHCI and may be used in CHCI exhibitions, presentations, and publications.  The chosen artist will be required to sign a release form, which will authorize CHCI to make use of the artwork, descriptions, and biographical information.  

Timeline

All forms and entries must be postmarked by Friday, May 30, 2003.

The chosen artist will be notified by the 1st week of July.   

Selection Process

CHCI will review submissions. Criteria for selection will be based on the artist’s ability to unite the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month and CHCI’s Annual Gala theme. 

Instructions to Submit

  • Complete a one-paragraph description of the artwork and include a biographical sketch of the artist.  (Note that these descriptions may be published in CHCI publications and/or press releases.)
  • A sketch of the intended final artwork. Color is preferred but black/white is acceptable.  Sample display need not be on canvas if painted, but should stay within the parameters of a minimum 8.5 in x 11 in to a maximum 18 in x 24 in.  Slides, samples, or pictures of the artist’s other finished works may also be included to complement his/her candidacy.
  • CHCI will be moving to a new location during the beginning of May.  Please call (202) 543-1771 before sending materials.
