The PMI Group, Inc. CEO Tours CHCI’s New Headquarters with a Commitment to Latino Youth

PMI Foundation Joins National Housing Initiative

WASHINGTON, DC (December 11, 2003) – On December 11, 2003, the CEO of one of the largest private mortgage insurers in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union and Hong Kong met with Ingrid M. Duran, president and CEO of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) to discuss a long-term strategic partnership that will benefit Latino youth.

Roger Haughton, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of The PMI Group, Inc. also pledged a $100,000 contribution to the CHCI National Housing Initiative (NHI) on behalf of the The PMI Foundation at CHCI’s new headquarters. The check presentation, which officially stamped PMI a Trusted Friend sponsor of the initiative, was only the beginning of PMI’s commitment to CHCI, according to Duran.

“It is rare that a CEO of a global corporation hand-deliver their contribution to an organization in its own backyard; furthermore, roll up their sleeves and brainstorm on how their commitment can go beyond the monetary,” said Duran.

“CHCI welcomes partnerships that help fulfill the Institute’s mission of developing the next generation of Latino leaders as well as support a corporation’s own industry commitment to the Hispanic community,” Duran added. “The partnership CHCI develops with PMI will provide new leadership development opportunities for Latino youth and help foster the goal of home ownership to Hispanics nationwide.”

Haughton toured CHCI’s new 8,242 square foot facility and visited with CHCI staff to learn the Institute’s inner-workings. Joining Haughton was Angeles Curry, PMI’s affordable housing manager for emerging markets.

"PMI's sponsorship of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute is very significant because our support will assist families that have not yet grabbed a rung on the housing ladder, and potential growth markets that have not traditionally been served well by our industry," said Roger Haughton, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The PMI Group, Inc..

The purpose of the PMI Foundation is to foster the goal of home ownership and provide access to affordable housing for underserved areas and populations. The PMI Foundation does this by supporting partnerships with national and local organizations that create housing opportunities and help revitalize neighborhoods in communities throughout the United States and around the world. The PMI Foundation has sponsored or co-sponsored thirty Habitat builds worldwide, and contributed to the funding of over sixty builds. The PMI Foundation is located in Walnut Creek, Calif.

The NHI focuses on expanding the accessibility of home ownership to Latinos by employing a novel bi-partisan, multi-tiered strategy to identify and develop solutions to address the current obstacles faced by Hispanics.  The effort targets 63 congressional districts – in 11 states – where Latinos comprise at least 25 percent of the constituency.  Three NHI fellows work in concert with an Advisory Committee comprised of Members of Congress, representatives of the lending and real estate industries, as well as advocacy organizations in order to adequately assess the needs of Latinos and implement strategies specially tailored to the varied needs of this diverse community.

CHCI, a non-profit and non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization, provides educational programs for Hispanic college and postgraduate students.  The CHCI Board of Directors is comprised of Hispanic Members of Congress, non-profit leaders, and corporate executives.  For more information on CHCI, call 1-800-EXCEL DC or visit www.chci.org.
