CHCI-Dell Technology Center for Latino Leadership Launched to Benefit Nation’s Emerging Hispanic LeadersWASHINGTON, DC (June
23, 2004) – In a landmark event for the Congressional Hispanic
Caucus Institute (CHCI), Hispanic Members of Congress and high ranking
executives from two of the world’s largest computer companies
participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony launching the CHCI-Dell
Technology Center for Latino Leadership.
The Technology Center will empower CHCI to provide the latest in computer technology to its program participants, who are widely considered the nation’s emerging Hispanic leaders. The Technology Center, which is stationed in CHCI’s new 8,242 square foot facility, was made possible through a three-year $180,000 partnership with Dell Inc. The Microsoft Corporation provided the Technology Center’s software valued at $60,000. “We recognize the role that technology can play in all parts of society,” said Rosendo Parra, Dell’s senior vice president, Americas. “Through the technology center, we’re helping to grow the next generation of Latino leaders.” “Dell with the support of Microsoft enabled CHCI to empower the nation’s emerging Hispanic leaders to complete prestigious and rigorous leadership development programs with the latest technology resources,” stated Ingrid M. Duran, CHCI President and CEO. “Their generous support is helping to bridge the digital and technology divide facing the Hispanic community.” Dell global executives Thurmond Woodard, chief ethics officer, and Parra joined CHCI board members, U.S. Representatives Ciro Rodriguez and Silvestre Reyes and Jack Krumholtz, Managing Director, Federal Government Affairs, Microsoft in the ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the CHCI-Dell Technology Center for Latino Leadership. Ten of CHCI’s 2004 Congressional Summer Interns showcased the technology center to ceremony attendees. “The Technology Center is a valuable resource for our community and makes the work we do at CHCI even more meaningful. It’s an inspiring example of Dell’s commitment to advancing the interests and opening the doors of opportunity to the Latino community,” said U.S. Rep. Ciro D. Rodriguez, chair of CHCI. The center is equipped with 14 Dell computer stations accompanied by fax machines, printers and color scanners. CHCI’s 20 public policy fellows, 30 congressional interns and 10 high school leaders will now be able to collaborate on required policy presentations, production of public policy recommendations and legislative briefs, and planning for community service projects in a centralized location, rather than relying on external resources. Microsoft completed the technology center with a generous software donation. "Microsoft is excited to be an integral part of the new CHCI Technology Center. The facility will enable CHCI's legislative interns and public policy Fellows to gain and enhance workplace skills with the use of state-of-the-art technology," said Krumholtz.
