WASHINGTON, DC (May 28, 2004) – The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) announced today the appointment of Ingrid M. Durán, president and CEO of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), to the organization’s Board of Directors.  NHLI is a national organization dedicated to developing Hispanic women as ethical leaders through training, professional development, relationship building, and community and world activism.  Durán is an alumna of the prestigious NHLI Mid Career Fellowship Program.

Since becoming CHCI’s executive director in 1998, Duran has transformed CHCI into the leading Hispanic educational non-profit organization in the nation.  Under her guidance, CHCI’s leadership development programs have grown substantially and are widely known for providing Latino youth with unique opportunities to explore and foster their leadership potential.

NHLI received an unprecedented request for nominations to serve on the Board of Directors, producing an impressive group of extremely qualified and enthusiastic alumnae.  The criteria was based on representation, background, skills, and commitment, all of which are essential in ensuring that NHLI thrives in its mission of developing Latina leaders.

“NHLI is an agent for change in America,” said Duran. “It empowers Latina professionals to become leaders of this nation and redefine the Hispanic woman to reflect our influence in business, society and culture. It is because of that impact that I am honored to serve on the NHLI board of directors.”

A native of Los Angeles, California, Ms. Durán served as Washington director of the National Association of Latino Appointed and Elected Officials prior to taking her position at CHCI.  She is a native of California and was raised in Wichita, Kansas.  Ms. Durán served as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps where she attained Honor Graduate standing in the Communications Center Operator School in Twentynine Palms, CA.  Ms. Durán earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from Park College in Arlington, Virginia, and currently resides in Falls Church, VA.

CHCI, a non-profit, non-partisan, educational 501(c)(3) organization, provides educational programs for Hispanic college and postgraduate students.  The CHCI Board of Directors is comprised of Hispanic Members of the U.S. Congress, non-profit leaders, and corporate executives.  For more information on CHCI, visit our website, www.chciyouth.org or call 1-800-EXCEL DC.
