The PMI Foundation and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Impact Bay Area Hispanic YouthPMI and CHCI Raise over $70,000 for National Leadership Development Programs WALNUT CREEK, CA (May 3, 2004) -- The PMI Foundation and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute raised over $70,000 to benefit CHCI’s nationally recognized leadership development programs impacting Hispanic youth, as the Institute held an education forum at PMI headquarters attended by dozens of Bay Area Hispanic high school and college students. The dollars raised will fund CHCI’s signature
programs, including the Congressional Internship, Public Policy
Fellowship and College Scholarship. Combined, CHCI’s programs have
developed thousands of the nation’s emerging leaders and helped fund the
higher education of an equal number of Hispanic students pursuing
undergraduate and graduate degrees.
“PMI enabled CHCI to have an important presence in northern California, an area of the U.S. where Hispanic youth are determined to become leaders of this country and where many corporations find the importance of investing in the nation’s fastest growing population,” said Ingrid M. Duran, CHCI President and CEO. PMI launched its partnership with CHCI in December 2003 by officially becoming a Trusted Friend sponsor of the Institute’s national housing initiative – HOGAR, Hispanic Ownership, a Growing American Reality. It was then that PMI pledged that it would broaden its partnership with CHCI to, in addition to helping the Institute bridge the Hispanic homeownership divide, support CHCI’s mission of developing the new generation of Latino leaders. Roger Haughton, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The PMI Group, Inc., said, "For more than two decades CHCI has fueled nearly every sector of the nation's workforce with quality leaders through its signature programs. As CHCI embarks on the new challenge of bridging the Hispanic homeownership divide, PMI believes that by helping CHCI develop new leaders, we are also helping develop new homeowners for America." In addition to The PMI Foundation, PG&E Corporation, Keane Inc., FusionStorm, Chouinard & Myhre, Deloitte Touche, Ernst & Young, Kochis Fitz Wealth Management, Applied Graphics, Business Communication Resources, Allen Matkins Leck Gamble & Mallory, CAST, Cognos and Douglas Parking made contributions to CHCI’s leadership development programs.
Steve Smith, President and Chief Operating Officer, The PMI Group, Inc, said “PMI committed to partner with CHCI to tackle the obstacles that Hispanic Americans face when pursuing their goal of homeownership. Our fundraising efforts will support CHCI in delivering programs – such as today’s educational forum – to assist the next generation of Latino young men and woman as they assume leadership roles in our society.” The forum featured a panel consisting of CHCI board of director, Catherine M. Pino of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and CHCI alumni, Steven Lopez (former intern and fellow), Johanna Calabria (former fellow), Orson Aguilar (former fellow) and Sara Quinto (former intern). CHCI, a Washington-DC based non-profit and non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization, provides educational programs for Hispanic college and postgraduate students. The CHCI board of directors is comprised of Hispanic members of Congress, non-profit leaders, and corporate executives. For more information on CHCI, call 1-800-EXCEL DC or visit www.chci.org. The purpose of the PMI Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by The PMI Group, Inc, (NYSE:PMI), is to foster the goal of home ownership and provide access to affordable housing for under served areas and populations. The PMI Foundation does this by supporting national local organizations that create housing opportunities and help revitalize neighborhoods in communities throughout the United States and around the world. The PMI Foundation has sponsored or co-sponsored thirty Habitat builds worldwide and contributed to the funding of over sixty builds. The PMI Foundation is located in Walnut Creek, CA. ###
