MAYORS UNITE IN SUPPORT OF CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CAUCUS INSTITUTEWashington, D.C. – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), an educational non-profit with a prestigious, 25-year history, received the support of more than 300 of the nation's mayors gathered in Chicago for the 73rd US Conference of Mayors (USCM) from June 10 to14 to discuss a variety of key issues affecting America's cities. Mayors Manny Diaz, Miami, Florida and Betty Flores, Laredo, Texas, sponsored a resolution in support of CHCI and its educational programs and services that was unanimously passed yesterday by the full conference of mayors. Education being one of the significant issues challenging most cities, led Mayors Diaz and Flores to submit a resolution urging the nation’s mayors to partner with CHCI to increase the visibility of these leadership and educational programs and help to identify young, talented Latinos in their cities as potential program participants. “CHCI is honored to partner with our Nation's Mayors to help open the doors of opportunity for Latino youth to realize their full potential and take on leadership roles. This is part of CHCI's effort to reach out to and work with more partners to inform Latino youth about tremendous leadership development programs and opportunities,” said the CEO and President, Esther Aguilera. The USCM resolution stressed the following: the Latino population is the largest and fastest-growing minority in the U.S. at 14 percent; Latino children represent the second largest group of students in the nation’s schools, yet more than one-fourth (27.3%) of Latinos have less than a ninth-grade education and only one in ten have a college degree; and, CHCI programs foster leadership and prepare youth to become leaders and decision-makers in our society and increase Hispanic representation at senior leadership and management levels in the private, public, profit and non-profit sectors. CHCI, a non-profit and non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization, provides educational programs for Hispanic college and postgraduate students. CHCI’s board of directors is comprised of Hispanic members of the U.S. Congress, non-profit sector leaders, and corporate executives.
