Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Launches Ready to Lead with Los Angeles High School StudentsHispanic Members of Congress Help Motivate, Educate, Empower WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation’s premier Hispanic youth leadership development and educational organization, announced the successful launch of Ready to Lead, a workshop-based program created to educate students on preparing for college admission, empower them to create and follow a personal financial plan that secures their dreams of higher education, and motivate them to serve as leaders for their communities. Over 200 high school students attended workshops held Saturday, April 7, 2007, at Cal Poly, Pomona. Members of Congress, including CHCI Chairman, Hon. Joe Baca (CA-43) and Hon. Grace Flores Napolitano (CA-38), addressed the students, providing words of encouragement. “Each student in this room is capable of achieving limitless possibilities,” said Hon. Baca. “A college education is within your reach, and by looking ahead, you are taking the steps to better your future.” Ready to Lead will continue with regional trainings in New York and Washington D.C. throughout 2007. The new program is made possible in part through a national outreach partnership with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. “The program’s curriculum is uniquely designed to engage youth at a critical life juncture, utilizing CHCI Alumni and peer leaders who identify with students’ backgrounds, needs and interests,” said CHCI Chief Operating Officer, Carmen Joge. “Students are given the tools they need to lead and to become civically engaged and involved in their communities.” The program also helps raise awareness on college scholarships, Public Policy Fellowships, Congressional Internships and other critical educational tools available to all Hispanic students, parents and educators through CHCI.
