Congresswoman Hilda Solis (CA-32) Joins CHCI Roundtable: Cultural Complexities of Cervical Cancer among LatinasCHCI Public Policy Fellow Moderates Debate among Distinguished Panel WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation’s premier Hispanic youth leadership development and educational organization, announced its Public Policy Fellows will host a roundtable discussion on the disproportionate incidence of cervical cancer among Hispanic women in the United States. The roundtable will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2105. Expert panelists, including Hon. Hilda Solis, (CA-32), will discuss cultural barriers — including lack of insurance, education, and access to health care — which may impact the 2,000 Hispanic women diagnosed with cervical cancer each year in the U.S. Latinas experience the second-highest rate of invasive cervical cancer of any ethnic group and a disproportionately high mortality rate.
The Public Policy Fellowship roundtable is part of CHCI’s Emerging Leaders’ Series to help address issues of importance to Hispanics. The discussion will be moderated by Edward Roybal Public Health Fellow, Elizabeth Gutierrez. A native of Galesburg, IL, Ms. Gutierrez is fulfilling her Fellowship placement with the National Hispanic Medical Association. CHCI’s nationally recognized, nine-month Public Policy Fellowship, the nation’s first Hispanic Public Policy Fellowship Program, offers 24 college graduates an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the public policy area of their choice, with placements ranging from Capitol Hill to the federal government, nonprofit organizations and corporate America.
