CHCI Graduate Fellows Moderate Insightful Discussions at the 2014 YLLSS

From April 8-9, the 2013-14 CHCI Graduate Fellows organized and moderated the 2014 Young Latino Leaders Summit Series (YLLSS). Experts from the fields of health, housing, education, law and STEM, gathered at the behest of the CHCI Fellows for a timely discussion on the issues that affect the Latino community. The first day of the summits, held at the Senate Visitor Center, featured Reps. Tony Cárdenas, Ted Deutch, Luis Gutierrez, Lucille Roybal-Allard, and CHCI Chair, Rubén Hinojosa, among the many expert panelists. Read more

On March 27, CHCI and the CHCI Alumni Association, together with Teach For America, hosted a networking reception with Latino area professionals and leaders at New York Life’s Midtown Manhattan headquarters to promote the Presidential Appointments Initiative and to encourage CHCI Alumni to apply for leadership roles. CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera opened the evening with a warm welcome. Read more

State Farm Youth Advisory Board (YAB) Grant Application is Now Available!

State Farm's Youth Advisory Board (YAB) provides service-learning grants to nonprofits, K-12 schools and higher education institutions. Four million dollars will be granted to quality, youth-led service-learning initiatives throughout the United States. During the summits, each fellow organizes and moderates a public policy roundtable discussion on insightful and timely issues affecting the Latino community and the nation. CHCI Fellows select a topic from their specific areas of focus—education, health, housing, law, or STEM. These discussions are held on Capitol Hill, where members of Congress, Congressional staffers, public policy experts, national leaders and other changemakers are invited to attend, free of charge. Watch the Cesar Chavez Movie This Weekend & Sign the Petition

On March 28th, the nation will finally get the opportunity to watch the critically acclaimed movie, Cesar Chávez, about the life story of one of the most important civil rights figures in U.S. history, starring Michael Peña and America Ferrera. CHCI has worked closely with the cast and director, Diego Luna, to make sure that this unique and often overlooked part of our civil rights history gets the attention it deserves.

Films like Cesar Chávez are judged by how well they do at the box office its opening weekend, which is why it's crucial that we help spread the word—so movies like this succeed and others like it are made!

CHCI is encouraging everyone to organize Meet-Ups in their areas and watch the movie this weekend (March 28-30) with family and friends.
