On Saturday, April 21, nearly 120 students and mentors gathered on the campus of Mountain View College for a day of inspiration and motivation as part of CHCI’s college readiness program, Ready to Lead. CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera started the day by encouraging students and introducing the six CHCI alumni who volunteered at the program. They each spoke about their experience with CHCI programs and the importance of leadership. Esther and the alumni were followed by Mountain View President Felix Zamora who shared his inspiring story of overcoming obstacles. (More)

On Tuesday, April 24, CHCI held its Joint Fellows and Spring Interns Graduation Networking Reception in the Gold Room at the Rayburn House Office Building honoring its 2011-12 Public Policy and Graduate Fellows and its 2012 CHCI-Walmart Spring Interns. More than 100 people were in attendance. CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera and CHCI Chair Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez provided opening remarks, followed by insights from Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Joe Baca. Finally, Gil Valdes of New York Life gave sponsor remarks. (More)

Each year, participants in CHCI’s Fellowship Program are asked to raise money to help fund scholarships as a way of expressing appreciation for the opportunities given to them and ensuring those opportunities are available to future students. The 2011-12 CHCI Public Policy and Graduate Fellows would like to thank the over 75 supporters and Capitol Yacht Charters for making the cruise fundraiser, held May 3 on the Potomac a success! (More)

With the support of 23 sponsors especially our golf tournament host, ExxonMobil, and the 123 golfers in attendance including four members of Congress, Reps. Joe Baca, Eni Faleomavaega, Gene Green, and Silvestre Reyes, CHCI raised more than $190,000 in support of its Scholarship Program for Latino youth. On April 16, the nine 2011-12 Graduate Fellows moderated their respective public policy roundtable discussions on insightful and timely issues affecting the Latino community and the nation. The areas of focus included—education, health, housing, law, and science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM). The discussions, which took place on Capitol Hill, were attended by members of Congress, Congressional staffers, public policy experts, national leaders, media, and other change makers. The summit was the culmination of months of training in becoming better versed in the public policy formulation process. Some of the high quality panelists/subject matter experts included: Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, Eduardo Ochoa, Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education, U.S. Dept. of Education, and Max Sevillia, Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs, NALEO Educational Fund, to name a few. On Saturday, March 31, over 100 Latino high school students invested in their futures by participating in CHCI’s college readiness program, Ready to Lead. Students gathered at The University of Texas at San Antonio-Downtown Campus for a day of information and inspiration. CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera opened the event by thanking all the young participants for their attendance and recognized their many achievements. As a personal example of success for the young Latinos, she stressed the importance of finishing high school and obtaining higher education. She also promoted the great programs that CHCI offers and encouraged them to apply as they continue their educational journeys. (More)
