CHCI closed the academic year with its last Ready to Lead (R2L) event of the semester in Brooklyn, NY.  For the second time, St. Francis College hosted over 100 students and mentors on Saturday, May 31, 2014 for an information-packed program. The goal of R2L is to help Latino high school students enter postsecondary education by motivating them to complete high school, empowering them to serve and lead in their communities, and instilling a belief that a college education is achievable. Students were trained in college planning, financing a college education, and leadership development.

St. Francis College Associate Director of Student Activities Ruben Gonzalez started the event by officially welcoming R2L participants to the campus. This was followed by student workshops highlighting the college-going process: College Planning and Financial Literacy. Daniel Wu, Admissions Counselor at St. Francis College, facilitated an informational presentation that helped students prepare a plan to apply to college; and representatives from the Federal Reserve Bank engaged students in a fun and interactive session about the many benefits associated with being smart financial planners, especially when it comes to financing a college education.

The college knowledge did not stop in the workshop sessions. R2L New York participants received a wealth of information throughout the event from other community leaders and CHCI supporters. Brian Doran of Popular Community Bank kicked off the Mentoring Power Hour session and welcomed a large group of professionals and CHCI alumni. Students received one-on-one mentoring and guidance on how to develop smart, sensible college plans. During lunch, students had the opportunity to hear from Eduardo Samame of Time Warner Cable Media.

CHCI Alumni Alfonso Lopez and Edgar Nunez presented the Leadership Development workshop, guiding students through CHCI’s Four Pillars of Leadership and helping them assess their personal leadership capabilities. The event closed with a powerful keynote address by CHCI alumnus Raul Magdaleno who moved the entire room with his personal story of struggle and eventual triumph. Magdaleno asked students to never quit and give up on themselves, and to “throw away” any negative thoughts that were holding them back from achieving success.

Ready to Lead continues to have an impact on all participants. As one student summarized it, "I loved it! I really liked all the workshops that I took. I want to be invited to more events like this. This event opened my mind and prepared me more for college life."

With the support of Popular Community Bank, State Farm®, Time Warner Cable, News Corporation, the Federal Reserve Bank and St. Francis College, R2L was able to impact the lives of young Latinos in New York and empower them to pursue higher education. CHCI is proud to continue educating, motivating, and empowering Latino youth in the Greater New York Area.
