From April 8-9, the 2013-14 CHCI Graduate Fellows organized and moderated the 2014 Young Latino Leaders Summit Series (YLLSS). Experts from the fields of health, housing, education, law and STEM, gathered at the behest of the CHCI Fellows for a timely discussion on the issues that affect the Latino community.

The first day of the summits, held at the Senate Visitor Center, featured Reps. Tony Cárdenas, Ted Deutch, Luis Gutierrez, Lucille Roybal-Allard, and CHCI Chair, Rubén Hinojosa, among the many expert panelists. CHCI Housing Fellows, Scott Astrada and Lissette Flores, covered how reforms in housing policies may benefit and inspire Latino homeownership in the near future. CHCI Secondary Education Fellow Norma Salazar-Ibarra discussed the important issue of Common Core Standards in schools; and CHCI Higher Education Fellow, Brenda Calderon, explored ways of how to close the attainment gap among Latino students.  CHCI Health Graduate Fellow Daphne Delgado highlighted initiatives available to combat childhood obesity among Latinos and CHCI Law Graduate Fellow Carolina Rizzo underscored the distressing reality of the immigration detention system.

Day two continued with the STEM summits, organized by CHCI Shell STEM Graduate Fellow Wesley Brooks and CHCI API STEM Graduate Fellow Elizabeth Padilla-Crespo. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen gave an introduction during Wesley’s summit, on the future of energy for the United States. CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera introduced Rep. Ben Ray Luján, who provided opening remarks for Elizabeth’s summit, addressing the need to restore and manage contained sites.

The CHCI 2014 YLLSS is the culmination of eight months of hard work for CHCI’s Graduate Fellows. Each one has dedicated countless hours to prepare their summit, from writing the white papers to organizing their panelists. CHCI is extremely proud of their accomplishments and encourages everyone to read their phenomenal and insightful white papers.
