CHCI Inspires Ready to Lead Participants in Los Angeles
CHCI's Ready to Lead college readiness program hosted eighty-five students from the Los Angeles area at the California State University (CSU)-Dominguez Hills campus on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Esther Aguilera, CHCI President & CEO; Greg Saks, Vice President for University Advancement at Cal State Dominguez Hills; and Luis Ayala, Vice Mayor for the City of Alhambra and CHCI Alumnus welcomed students from Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Downtown Magnet High Schools, as well as a group from the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles.
The students participated in workshops emphasizing the importance of college planning, financial aid, and leadership development. CHCI alumni Luis Campillo and Jose Franco presented the leadership development workshop, providing firsthand experience on the importance of developing leadership qualities. The Los Angeles CHCI Alumni Association Chapter President Cynthia Gutierrez, and Vice President Vanessa Ramirez facilitated the Mentoring Power Hour, where students were able to network with established Latino leaders from their community. Mentors included members of the Los Angeles chapter of the CHCI Alumni Association and representatives from program sponsor General Mills, including Multicultural Marketing Manager Maria Rodas and Multicultural Community Relations Planning Associate Pamela Diaz.
Motivational speaker and CHCI alumnus Raul Magdaleno, the MillerCoors 2010 Lider of the Year, passed along insightful advice to the young audience with his inspirational life story, concluding a powerful day of programming for the next generation of Latino leaders.
