CHCI Interns Tour Time Warner Cable Facilities

Partnership Aims to Increase Number of Latinos in STEM Careers

Time Warner Cable yesterday welcomed four interns from the CHCI 2011 Summer Congressional Internship Program to its facility in Herndon, VA. Time Warner Cable's support of the internship program furthers its efforts to engage young people in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

"We are very proud to have the ongoing support of Time Warner Cable in our efforts to develop the next generation of Latino leaders," said Esther Aguilera, CHCI President & CEO. "Careers in STEM fields will continue to increase in this century and we must ensure the Latino community is prepared to take leadership positions."

"We believe it is especially important to encourage the leaders of tomorrow," said Fernando Laguarda, Vice President of External Affairs and Policy Counselor for Time Warner Cable. "We are excited about the opportunities we can make available through this partnership with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute to encourage Latino leaders from around the country to pursue their interests in STEM and public policy."

CHCI's 2011 Time Warner Cable interns include:

  • Daniel Armenta of Lawrence, KS, placed with the office of Rep. Albio Sires (NJ)
  • Rebecca Jimenez of Carrolton, TX, placed with the office of Rep. Al Green (TX)
  • Narda Terrones of Mission, TX, placed with the office of Rep. Henry Cuellar (TX)
  • and Juany Torres of San Antonio, TX, placed with the office of Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (TX)

At their congressional offices, interns are responsible for a number of duties including conducting research, monitoring day-to-day hearings, managing constituent communications and assisting with general office matters. Interns will also participate in weekly CHCI leadership and professional development sessions and meet with corporate representatives, national elected officials and foreign dignitaries. All participants in the CHCI STEM internship program must be "STEM" majors in school and should have interest in public policy.
