Chicago Parents and Students are Ready to Lead

Nearly 150 students, parents and mentors gathered at the Northeastern Illinois University campus to participate in another successful and informative Ready to Lead (R2L) workshop on Saturday, October 16, 2010.  Students had the opportunity to learn more about college planning and financial aid, as well as develop their leadership skills and interact with Latino mentors from the Chicago area and beyond. Participants were joined by representatives from Darden Restaurants, General Mills, and Nissan, who not only provided encouraging remarks but spent time one-on-one with students during the Mentoring Power Hour.

This 2010 Chicago R2L program was the first ever to include bilingual sessions for Spanish speaking parents. Like the students, parents received information on college planning, financial aid, and scholarships during presentations from bilingual college experts. The interactive sessions allowed for parents to raise questions and learn how to best support their children as they pursue the goal of a college education.

Special guests included Illinois State Senator Iris Y. Martinez, Northeastern Illinois University President Dr. Sharon Hahs, and District Director for Congressman Luis Gutierrez Salvador Cerna. To close the day, students and parents enjoyed an inspirational keynote address by Alex Perez, a Chicago native whose dedication and hard work helped him overcome a variety of challenges to become a reporter for NBC Chicago.

Students, parents, and mentors alike had a great day full of knowledge and inspiration. Stay tuned for more updates as CHCI prepares to bring Ready to Lead to Kingsville, Texas in November!
