Members of Congress Join Spring Interns at Graduation on Capitol Hill
Members of Congress joined hill staffers, friends and family to recognize the CHCI 2011 Spring Internship Class at a graduation reception on Capitol Hill on April 14, 2011. Participating members of Congress included Reps. Joe Baca, Xavier Becerra, Jared Polis, Silvestre Reyes, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Lucille Roybal-Allard and Jose E. Serrano.
CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera provided opening remarks. "These interns reflect the struggles and aspirations of our community and the nation," said Aguilera. "They come from ten states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. They represent the diverse Hispanic culture, 66 percent of the interns come from families whose household income is below $45,000, and 33 percent of the interns are the first generation to go to college."
CHCI Spring Intern Ariadna Ginez gave class remarks and highlighted the unique opportunity afforded CHCI interns. "The CHCI Internship Program does not give you a typical experience on the Hill, it gives you an EXCEPTIONAL experience on the Hill," said Ginez. "I thought I'd hit the jackpot just being paid, but it turns out that I have gotten so much more than that. I mean, who else gets to meet the U.S. Treasurer on their first day, right? We've gotten opportunities to see and meet so many people—presidents, prime ministers, CEOs, ambassadors, senators, representatives,...and also people who might not have super fancy titles but put in a lot of hard work to make a difference.
The 15 interns left their imprint on Capitol Hill as several of them received news coverage about their experiences in local print and online media publications.
CHCI is currently recruiting Latino undergraduates for its fall internship program with the deadline fast approaching on April 29. Apply today!
