CHCI hosted its Regional Celebration of Latino Leadership at a reception in Edinburg, Texas on Wednesday, March 27, 2013. The event showcased our strong Latino leadership in South Texas and helped increase support of our vital programs. The contributions raised during this event will be invested to benefit local students and help advance our mission of developing the Next Generation of Latino Leaders®.

Members of Congress gathered from all over the country to join CHCI Chair Congressman Ruben Hinojosa in support of CHCI's mission, including Reps. Eddie Bernice Johnson, Sheila Jackson Lee, Henry Cuellar, Filemon Vela, and Pete Gallego from Texas; Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico; and Reps. Tony Cardenas, Raul Ruiz, and Juan Vargas of California. Former members of Congress Kika de la Garza and Solomon Ortiz also attended, as did Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp and UT-Pan American President Robert Nelsen. The event was celebrity hosted by CHCI alumnus and 1991 Congressional Intern Octavio Saenz, who now anchors the news for Univision and Fox in the Rio Grande Valley.

While in South Texas, the members of Congress also toured the Anzalduas and Pharr-Reynosa international bridges and visited the University of Texas-Pan American and Doctors Hospital at Renaissance for discussions on healthcare and education policies. CHCI thanks board member Alonzo Cantu, who spearheaded fundraising efforts and was instrumental in making the event a huge success.
