On Wednesday, July 25, CHCI played host to its first joint Summer Programs Graduation Networking Reception, honoring the 2012 CHCI Summer Congressional Internship class and High School Latino Leaders in D.C.(HSLLDC) participants. The 83 future Latino leaders excitedly entered the Library of Congress for this momentous occasion, and stood proudly as they heard motivational remarks from Reps. Rubén Hinojosa and Joe Baca, and CHCI Chair Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez. There were many special guests in attendance such as CHCI Advisory Council member Hon. Bob Garcia and his wife Jane Garcia, Rep. Donna Marie Christian-Christensen, and reception sponsor Silvia Aldana, Manager of Federal Governmental Relations, PG&E, among others. CHCI's largest private funders Gilbert and Jackie Cisneros made a special visit to meet interns Mayra Gradilla and Ana Orozco, sponsored through their endowment fund.
|In her opening remarks, CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera highlighted the diversity of the class. "These students reflect the struggles and aspirations of our community and the nation. They come from 20 states and Puerto Rico. The 2012 class of CHCI Summer Interns and HSLLDC participants represents 11 different Hispanic ethnic backgrounds. Fifty-one percent of the interns and forty-nine percent of the High School students are from families whose household income is below $30,000," said Aguilera.|
The interns class remarks were given by David Bohnett Foundation Intern Edgar Cruz. Cruz shared a personal story about his summer experience and the leadership training received from CHCI. "Who would have thought that in just eight weeks we would become promising leaders? I can honestly say that my fellow classmates and I have the skill sets to be the great leaders CHCI has prepared us to be," said Cruz. Afterwards, Silvia Aldana of PG&E, gave the students some encouraging remarks. "You are off to such a wonderful start in your young careers, please stay the course. Most importantly, give back to the community from which you came," said Aldana.
