R2L Dallas Serves as True Inspiration to Dallas Area Youth
On Saturday, April 21, nearly 120 students and mentors gathered on the campus of Mountain View College for a day of inspiration and motivation as part of CHCI’s college readiness program, Ready to Lead.
CHCI President & CEO Esther Aguilera started the day by encouraging students and introducing the six CHCI alumni who volunteered at the program. They each spoke about their experience with CHCI programs and the importance of leadership. Esther and the alumni were followed by Mountain View President Felix Zamora who shared his inspiring story of overcoming obstacles.
The day’s workshops included a College Planning workshop presented by CHCI Alumnus Amilcar Guzman. Students were taught about the classes required for college admissions, instructed on how to fill out college admissions applications, and given tips for selecting a college.
Ready to Lead partner the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas presented the Financial Literacy workshop. Students were introduced to topics including fiscal responsibility, how to open a bank account and balance a check book, how to fill out a financial aid application and alternative sources of funding a college education. CHCI alumna Angie Gamez presented the Leadership Development workshop, citing the importance of mentorship and how it can help shape a youth’s future.
One of the highlights of the day was the Mentoring Power Hour. Over 20 Latino leaders from the Dallas community, representing partners and sponsors such as AT&T’s HACEMOS, State Farm, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, participated in the activity. The hour long session provided students with the opportunity to engage these professionals and ask specific questions to help guide their own personal educational attainment paths.
The Ready to Lead Dallas event had a powerful ending as guest speaker Raul Magdaleno, another accomplished CHCI alumnus, shared with the students the importance of not giving up or listening to others who may not think they can accomplish their goals. His inspirational remarks had the students on their feet and cheering at the end of the day!
The final Ready to Lead of the semester will take place on Saturday, May 19 at Miami Dade College, North Campus.
