Trailblazer Rep. Ed Pastor Inspires R2L Phoenix Participants

Rep. Ed Pastor with R2L ParticipantsOver 130 high school students from the Phoenix area gathered at the South Mountain Community College campus to hear Rep. Ed Pastor speak about the opportunities that open up to those who pursue higher education degrees.  The students were energized as they were able to relate to the Congressman, who despite his humble beginnings was able to obtain a law degree from Arizona State University, later becoming an elected official in Congress.

To further support the ambitious students, comprehensive workshops were offered on financial literacy, college planning, and leadership development.  The knowledge of representatives from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, South Mountain Community College and the CHCI Alumni Association helped clarify unanswered questions and concerns for students.  As one R2L participant expressed, “all the questions I had today have been answered.”

Notable speakers that participated in the Phoenix R2L workshop included Janet Ortega of South Mountain Community College, Victor Peña of AT&T HACEMOS, and Susan Sutherland of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.  Additionally, about 20 distinguished professionals and college students came to network with the future high school graduates during the Mentoring Power Hour.  To end the day, CHCI Alumnus and R2L motivational speaker Raul Magdaleno helped the student audience embrace the slogan “I don’t quit!” The sound of determination echoed throughout South Mountain Community College.

R2L hopes to excite and motivate the high school students of San Antonio during the next workshop on March 31 at the University of Texas at San Antonio.  This workshop will be part of a two-day educational event hosted by CHCI and its partners.  The first event--Partnerships for Latino Education Success--will be held on March 30 at the San Antonio Convention Center.
