Powerful Turnout at CHCI Event Honoring Cesar Chavez

On February 4, CHCI and the United Farm Workers of America, hosted the Film and Discussion on the Life and Work of Cesar Chavez at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Co-hosted by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, the event gathered over 250 guests, eager to preview the new Cesar Chavez film. Are You a High School Student? Apply to R2L NextGen before April 30!

From now through Wednesday, April 30, high school students from specific cities can apply to CHCI’s 2014 R2L NextGen Program. This exciting civic engagement and leadership program brings 40 students from across the country to Washington, D.C. during the week of July 27- August 1, 2014. Students will gain expansive knowledge about our democratic process, engage with Latino community leaders, and explore the nation’s capital. Read more

Since graduating from CHCI’s 2012 R2L NextGen program, junior alumni Juan Daniel Ramos, a senior at McArthur High School in Irving, Texas, has soared to new heights. “After the program I returned to Dallas more motivated and empowered than ever before,” says Juan Daniel. He credits CHCI for helping him build the self-confidence he needed take his academics, personal enrichment and community service activities to the next level. Read more

CHCI Welcomes Anne Marie Estevez as its new General Counsel

CHCI is proud to welcome Anne Marie Estevez from Morgan Lewis, as its new CHCI General Counsel. Ms. Estevez brings years of experience to the table and has been named one of the leading U.S. lawyers for employment law by Chambers USA from 2006 through 2013, based on the views of clients, peers, and other industry professionals. Efren Ramirez, Jr. - January 2014 Junior Alumni of the Month

School: Albert G. Lane College Preparatory Technical High School
Grade: Senior
Hometown: Chicago, Illinois

Since graduating from the CHCI R2L NextGen program in 2012, Efren Ramirez, Jr. has applied the leadership skills that he has gained to make his community a better place for all, beginning with his education. After graduating from high school later this spring, Efren will be the first in his family to pursue a college education. Efren was selected to be a prestigious POSSE Scholar and will join a cohort of other Chicago area students at St. Olaf College in Minnesota on a full scholarship. He is committed to applying more of the same effort in college that he did while in high school. Currently, this senior at Albert G. Lane College Preparatory Technical High School takes a lot of pride in his academic achievements. He currently holds a 4.2 grade point average and has taken rigorous courses to help fuel his mind. CHCI’s Ready to Lead Returns to Los Angeles for a Star-Studded Event

More than 150 Los Angeles area students and mentors took part in CHCI’s Ready to Lead Los Angeles on Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Rio Hondo College. Actors Wilmer Valderrama (the official spokesperson for R2L) and Gina Rodriguez, and former Labor Secretary Hilda Solismade special appearances throughout the day encouraging students to take advantage of the information and connections they would receive during the course of the day. Students also took part in workshops on college planning, financial literacy, and leadership development. Read more

CHCI Latino Leadership Networking Reception in Los Angeles

On December 13, CHCI and the CHCI Alumni Association, together with Teach For America, National Hispanic Leadership Agenda and National Association for Latino Elected Officials, hosted a reception in Los Angeles with Latino area professionals and leaders at downtown’s LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes to promote the Presidential Appointments Initiative and to encourage CHCI Alumni to apply for leadership roles. CHCI President and CEO Esther Aguilera opened the evening with a warm welcome. Read more
