Nitza Milagros Escalera, Esq., 1981 Graduate Fellow

Ms. Escalera holds a BA from Le Moyne College, MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from Syracuse University, MPA from New York University, JD from Columbia University School of Law, and a MEd from the Teachers College of Columbia University.  Ms. Escalera currently lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Nitza’s resume speaks volume about her passion and expertise in the fields of education, advocacy and the law.  Early in her career, she served as Executive Director for the East Harlem College & Career Counseling Program, Inc. where she provided educational and career counseling to middle and high school students in East Harlem.  In 1987, she joined the New York City Commission on Human Rights where Nitza mediated and prosecuted discrimination complaints, and conducted training workshops for city employees and community organizations on New York City's human rights law with a focus HIV/AIDS related discrimination. 

From 1990-1994, she provided legal counsel to the Community Service Society of New York, litigating cases on behalf of the economically disadvantaged in the areas of health, education and environmental justice.  She also helped monitor city, state, and federal health legislation, regulations and policies relevant to the corporation’s health agenda. 

For the past 12 years, Nitza has served as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for Fordham University’s School of Law.  In her free time, Nitza is a regular participant in Fordham’s Habitat for Humanity Project.  She also assists not-for-profit and religious organizations draft and file incorporation papers, file applications for federal tax-exempt status and update corporation by-laws.  Nitza is a past Chair-Elect and Chair of the Section on Student Services for the Association of American Law Schools, Inc, and served on numerous boards including the Body Positive, Inc., Hispanic AIDS Forum, Inc., Latina Roundtable on Health and Reproductive Rights, Inc., and was a Board of Trustees Member for LeMoyne College.
